Not Meniere's?

There are a number of other conditions which present with similar or even identical symptoms as Meniere's disease. That said, what is listed below may also carry other symptoms not typical of Meniere's. However, it is worth remembering that Meniere's can only be diagnosed by excluding many other conditions, hence the need for investigatory scans or tests. Almost all of the time vertigo is not as a result of some life threatening illness, so try not to be alarmed at some of the illnesses on this list, and focus on exclusion rather than self-diagnosis!

Migraine or Migraine Associated Migraine (MAV)
As far back as when Prospere Meniere describes Meniere's, links have been made between Meniere's and Migraine.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Known as otoconia, this is debris which becomes loose in the inner ear, perhaps as a result of an accident involved the head.

Vestibular Neuritis
This is a viral infection of the vestibular nerve.

Labyrinthitis
An infection of the labyrinth, either bacterial or viral labyrinthitis, though more commonly viral.

Perilymph Fistula
This is an abnormal opening i.e. a tear of some sort, in the inner ear

Cholesteatoma
Skin growth occuring in abnormal location

Acoustic Neuroma
A non cancerous brain tumor of the acoustic nerve, which carries sound from the inner ear to the brain.
